Philippine Nurse Licensure Examination: Results & Application Guide

The Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination (PNLE) is a multiple-choice exam that consists of 500 items to determine basic nursing level competency. The PNLE is held every June and December annually in various public schools in the Philippines. The examination is mandated to be administered by the Professional Regulation Commission.

The NLE consists of five (5) parts namely: Nursing Practice I-Basic Foundation of Nursing and Professional Nursing Practice, Nursing Practice II-Community Health Nursing and Care of the Mother and Child, Nursing Practice III-Care of Clients with Physiologic and Psychosocial Alterations (Part A), Nursing Practice IV-Care of Clients with Physiologic and Psychosocial Alterations (Part B), and Nursing Practice V-Care of Clients with Physiologic and Psychosocial Alterations (Part C).

The tests draw basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes in the major subject areas i.e., Fundamentals of Nursing including Professional Adjustments, Maternal and Child Nursing, Community Health and Communicable Disease Nursing, Nursing of Adolescents, Adults and Aged, and Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing.

The following areas of knowledge will be integrated into each of the above-named areas: anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and therapeutics, nutrition and diet therapy, and parasitology and microbiology.

The nursing process serves as the framework in the nursing care of individuals, families, population groups & communities in various stages of development in health care setting. The focus of nursing is the promotion of health, prevention of illness, curative & rehabilitative aspects of care, alleviation of suffering & when recovery is not possible, towards a peaceful death.

The examination will test competencies in relation to eleven (11) key areas of responsibility contained in the Competency Standards of Nursing Practice in the Philippines. These key areas are categorized as follows:

Ratings

For an examinee to pass the NLE, he or she must obtain a general average of at least seventy-five percent (75%) with a rating of not below sixty percent (60%) in any of the five test subjects.

As per schedule, the two (2) days Philippine Nurse Licensure Examination (PNLE) consists of five (5) parts namely:

Attire

During the examination, each examinee is requested to wear the following:

Male ExamineesClinical Uniform with white shoes and white socks but without nameplate, school insignia/logo and pin or School Uniform.
Female ExamineesClinical Uniform with white shoes and white stockings but without nameplate, school insignia/logo and pin or School Uniform.
Pregnant Female ExamineesWhite Clinical Scrub Suit

Each examinee is also requested to bring the following on examination day:

  • Notice of Admission
  • Official Receipt
  • One (1) piece metered-stamp window mailing envelope
  • Two (2) or more pencils (No. 1 or No. 2)
  • Ball pens with BLACK ink only
  • One (1) piece long brown envelope
  • One (1) piece long transparent/plastic envelope (for keeping your valuables and other allowed items)
  • NON-PROGRAMMABLE CALCULATORS

The following are PROHIBITED inside the examination premises/rooms:

  • Books, notes, review materials and other printed materials containing principles or excerpts thereof, coded data/information/formula which are relevant to or connected with examination subject, programmable calculators, cellular phones, beepers, portable computers, or other similar gadgets/devices. (PRC Resolution No. 463 dated November 27, 1996)
    Bags of any kind (ladies bag, shoulder bags, attaché case, backpacks, etc.)
  • Other examination aides not stated.

Qualifications

At the time of filing the application for the examination of nurses, the applicant must:

  1. Be a citizen of the Philippines, or a citizen or a subject of a country which permits Filipino nurses to practice within its territorial limits on the same basis of the subject or citizen of such country, provided that the requirements for the registration or licensing or nurses in said country are substantially the same as those prescribed in this RA 9173.
  2. Be of good moral character
  3. Holder of a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from a college or university that complies with the standards of nursing education duly recognized by the proper government agency.
